How Do I Stop the Sober Sugar Cravings?

Do you feel like you have swapped one addiction for another? How many times have you woken up feeling the same remorse that you did after drinking a bottle of wine as you do now after spending all evening eating sugar? How many mornings have you frustratedly asked: why can’t I stop eating sugar? Read on to find out how to stop alcohol sugar cravings.

“Why can’t I stop eating sugar?”

The Sugar Monster Can take the edge off the pink cloud

The reality is that for many people, the sober pink cloud is tainted by the aftermath of the sugar monster. On the one side, we feel free from alcohol but on the other, we are trapped by the sticky claws of sugar. Sugar can leave us feeling puffy and sluggish the next day and almost as remorseful and low vibe as alcohol once did. We may have swapped: ‘why can’t I stop drinking?’ for ‘Why can’t I stop eating sugar?’

“Why can’t I stop eating sugar?”

Releasing Yourself from the Sugar Trap

The good news is that once you recognise this, you can once again release yourself from a trap. You have the power to live a life in full freedom; free from remorse, free from regret. You CAN and will wake up every day feeling full of beans and ready to take on the day. Sugar is just directing you towards a further step of healing that you can gratefully show up for now that you are Alcohol- Free.

The fact that only 40% of people increase their sugar intake after stopping drinking shows that it is possible to do this another way and you can too. Not everyone thinks: ‘why can’t I stop eating sugar’ and soon you will be one of them.

“Why can’t I stop eating sugar?”

Do you crave sugar because YOU don’t feel enough?

If you find:

– You are always looking for something to consume.

– Self-soothing by consuming something orally is your go to.

– Feeling dissatisfied with you who are and what you look like is the norm to you.

– You always want more: more sugar, more drinks, more food, more money, more stuff…

Then, the chances are that underneath all of these behaviours is the belief that you are not enough. We can spend our whole life time medicating this feeling. But once we understand it, we can easily shift it.

How I Realised I did Not Feel Enough

For years I had been a smoker, a Diet Coke drinker, a thumb sucker, a grazer, a serial dieter and I was always trying to deal with all of these individual problems, like bashing the crocodiles at the fair until one day I realised that they were all linked.

I realised when I started training with Marissa Peer that my constant need to consume sugar came from the same reason why I had wanted to consume alcohol, cigarettes, shopping etc. because deep down, I did not feel I was enough.

When we don’t feel that we are enough we want more, more, more to try and feel enough. The irony is that this usually makes us feel worse.

“You must say I AM ENOUGH constantly, say it out loud, say it with feeling, say it like you mean it and say it over and over again and do so for weeks until it sinks in and replaces the feeling that you are not enough which may be holding you back.”

Not only was I able to let go of the sugar habit but I was also able to enjoy every moment of my day even more than I was before. Because I really did feel enough and that was a wonderful feeling!

Now that I have been able to address these issues, sobriety has taken on a whole new up-level of wonderfulness for me. When we learn how to peel back the next layer of healing by dealing with the sugar monster, we step into more freedom, more self- love, more joy.

If you want to do what I did, follow my steps below:

How do I stop the sober sugar cravings?

Here is what I did to finally re-programme myself and step away from sugar:

1) Whatever you ate last night, have a substantial breakfast- you are enough and therefore you do not need to punish yourself. In fact, by reacting to a sugar binge by restricting the next day, you are only perpetuating the cycle.

2) Take to your journal: when did you first learn the behaviour of self-soothing with food and sugar? What patterns can you find in this in your past? What times in your life did you not do this? Why do you think this was?

3) Focus on nourishing yourself properly during the day to avoid craving sugar.

4) We are not meant to eat in between meals: utilise the power of neuroplasticity and know that every single day you manage to eat only at meal-times and not afterwards, you are strengthening your neural pathways to continue this behaviour. The more you do it, the easier and easier it will get.

Make sure your meals are sufficiently calorie dense and nourishing, then when you have finished have a hot drink and to distract yourself with something interesting. The more we do things that interest us, the easier and easier it gets.

5) Re-frame your evenings: now that you are not chained to the sugar monster anymore, you get to focus your evenings on things you really enjoy and find fulfilling, knowing that you are enough.

6) Remind yourself that YOU ARE ENOUGH constantly to re-programme your mind!
